I’m a sucker for a cinnamon sugar rim and this bella donna cocktail combines dark rum, amaretto, and sour mix to create the perfect, delicious accompaniment.
Bella donna- meaning beautiful lady, a deadly nightshade flower, a Stevie Nicks album, or a really tasty drink.
Obvi I’m talking about the drink today. I saw this drink on a menu at a local restaurant that we went to on my birthday back in October. It listed the ingredients but not the measurements. It also had the cinnamon sugar rim which I just absolutely love. It’s my favorite for pumpkin beer and also on this sparkling Lambrusco bourbon cocktail. So when I saw it on this drink, I knew I had to try it. Plus amaretto is one of my favorite liquors.
Ingredients for bella donna
Just 3 simple ingredients plus the cinnamon sugar rim. Ok so it’s 5 ingredients. Plus the lemon wedge which I just threw in there for a garnish because the drink although called “beautiful lady” is just brown. With a brown rim. Subsequently I used the lemon for a pop of color after I used it to rim the glass for the cinnamon sugar. Evidently, now we’re at 6 ingredients.
Dark rum
Amaretto
Sour mix- I made my own. With 4 ingredients. Which now makes 10. DO you see what I’m doing? I took a simple 3 ingredient drink and turned it into 10 ingredients. Making it more difficult than it has to be. This is sometimes a metaphor for my life. HA!
Cinnamon sugar- for the rim of the glass
Lemon wedge- for garnish optional, and to rim the glass.
Recipe
Rim the glass with cinnamon sugar and set aside. Meanwhile, In a shaker with ice, combine dark rum, amaretto, and sour mix. Shake well. Pour into glass. Garnish with lemon wedge optional.
To make homemade sour mix-
Firstly, in a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup water and a 1/2 cup of sugar. Secondly, stir to combine and bring mixture to a simmer. Thirdly, let simmer for 1-2 minutes and remove from heat. Fourthly, add 1/4 cup lemon juice and 1/4 cup lime juice. Let cool. Lastly, store in an air tight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks.

- 1 1/2 oz dark rum
- 1 1/2 oz amaretto
- 1 1/2 oz sour mix
- 1 TBL cinnamon
- 1 TBL sugar
Homemade sour mix
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup lemon juice fresh squeezed
- 1/4 cup lime juice fresh squeezed
Instructions
- On a plate, combine cinnamon and sugar. Use a lemon wedge/slice to rim the glass. Dip the glass in the cinnamon sugar mixture and set aside.
- In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine dark rum, amaretto, and sour mix. shake well. Pour into cinnamon sugar rimmed glass. Garnish with lemon wedge/slice optional.
