This is a tequila based drink with hints of vanilla and anise. I’ll be honest with you, I made this drink simply because I like the name. Freddy fudpucker. It’s fun to say.
I found this cocktail in a book called Playboy Bartender’s Guide by Thomas Mario a former food and drink editor of Playboy magazine. It’s from 1971. The book was given to me by my good friend George years ago when I was a bartender. There’s some really interesting drinks in this book. I previously made this California Lemonade from the same book.
A Freddy fudpucker is actually a Harvey wallbanger but with tequila instead of vodka. I’d heard of a Harvey wallbanger before but never tasted one. Both have orange juice and you “float” the Galliano on top. You do this by pouring the Galliano over the back of a spoon. I tried this but it was hard to tell the difference because Galliano is yellow and the oj is yellowish/orange.
This cocktail is like a tequila sunrise without the grenadine. The Galliano has 30 different herbs in it and has a very complex taste of anise, vanilla, and spices. It’s definitely different than anything I’ve tasted before.
