This rich, comforting, and flavorful Kaffe Karlsson is the Scandinavian version of Irish coffee. A perfect hot drink on a cold afternoon or to end a meal.
I originally saw this Kaffe Karlsson drink in British Good Housekeeping magazine. My Mom likes reading this magazine and always gives it to me when she is done. She likes reading books by British authors and books set in England. I actually enjoy reading this magazine and those kinds of books too. Consequently, I have found some good recipes from this magazine and this drink was one of them. Apparently, it’s very popular but I had never heard of it before. As soon as I read the ingredients, I knew I just had to try it. I mean seriously. Hot coffee, Bailey’s, and Cointreau with whipped cream on top and chocolate shavings! My mouth waters every time I think about it. I’ve had coffee and Bailey’s many times but never with Cointreau and now I feel like I’ve been missing out on something.
Ingredients for Kaffe Karlsson
Hot coffee- freshly brewed
Bailey’s- or any Irish cream liqueur
Cointreau- or any orange liqueur like triple sec or grand marnier
Whipped cream- homemade or from a can. I used canned whipped cream because I was just being too lazy to make my own. Although I do love homemade.
Chocolate- grated, just a small piece will do. I had a small Hershey bar leftover from my kids Halloween candy
Recipe
Kaffe Karlsson
(serves 1)
6-8 ounces freshly brewed coffee
1 ounce Irish cream
1 ounce orange liqueur
whipped cream
chocolate- a small piece, grated
In a mug or heatproof glass, add Irish cream and orange liqueur. Top with hot coffee. Add whipped cream and grated chocolate to the top. The whipped cream and chocolate are optional but so very highly recommended.
To health, wealth, and happiness! Cheers!
