Recipe for red white and blue cocktail
Red white and blue cocktail
(serves 1)
Ingredients
- 1 ounce grenadine
- 1 ounce vodka
- 1 ounce lemonade
- 1 ounce blue curacao
- Ice
- Red, white, and blue popsicle (such as a Bomb Pop or Johnny Pop)
Instructions
- First, start with the red layer: Pour 1 ounce of grenadine into the bottom of a tall clear glass (like a highball or hurricane glass). It’s thick and heavy, so it’ll settle nicely at the bottom.
- Next, mix the middle (white) layer: In a shaker cup, mix 1 ounce of vodka with 1 ounce of lemonade. Add 1/2 of the ice. Then, carefully pour this mixture over the back of a spoon to float it gently on top of the grenadine. This forms your “white” layer. (I attempted this 3 times and my layering skills were just not up to par.)
- After that, finish with the blue: Add the rest of the ice and slowly pour 1 ounce of blue curacao over the back of a spoon to float it on top of the lemonade-vodka layer. The key is patience- slow pouring keeps the colors separated.
- Finally, garnish with a popsicle: Add a red, white, and blue popsicle right into the drink for a playful and patriotic garnish. It adds flavor as it melts. and instantly brings summer vibes.

Tips for perfect layering:
- First and foremost, choose ingredients with different densities. Grenadine is heaviest, followed by the lemonade-vodka mix, and then blue curacao.
- To insure clean layers, pour slowly over the back of a spoon to help each layer float instead of mixing.
- In addition, chill all ingredients beforehand to minimize melting and help the layers stay crisp longer.

*Also as a side note, I recommend stirring the drink after you serve it before you take your first sip. It blends the drink to a nice purple color and you avoid getting a big gulp of either the blue curacao or the grenadine if you’re using a straw.
