I’m taking one of the oldest and most iconic cocktails and giving it a modern twist. This salted caramel old fashioned made with salted caramel whiskey, gives this time honored drink a luxurious and decadent edge.
This cocktail is perfect for fall and winter evenings when you’re craving something cozy but refined. It’s a very indulgent twist on a classic. Whether you’re a seasoned old fashioned enthusiast or new to the world of whiskey, this version is sure to impress with it’s unique flavor profile.
Ingredients for salted caramel old fashioned
Salted caramel whiskey- adds a rich, sweet, and slightly salty flavor that perfectly complements the traditional elements of an old fashioned.
Angostura bitters-warming with a lingering bitterness and spicy notes, it’s an essential ingredient in an old fashioned
Orange peel- used as a garnish for added citrus aroma and flavor, you first express the oils from the peel over the top of the drink by twisting it.
Caramel and sea salt- optional as a garnish around the rim or on one side of the glass to enhance the salted caramel notes
Recipe
Salted caramel old fashioned
(serves 1)
2 ounces salted caramel whiskey
3 dashes angostura bitters
Ice (preferably a large cube)
Orange peel (for garnish)
Caramel and sea salt (for garnish, optional)
Prep the glass- Dip the rim of the glass or 1 side of the glass in caramel sauce and then into some sea salt flakes. This is optional.
Add 3 dashes angostura bitters to the glass. Next, pour in the salted caramel whiskey. Stir gently. Add a large ice cube (or a few medium size ones if you don’t have a large ice cube). Lastly, take an orange peel and gently twist it over the top of the drink and then drop it on top.
Note- a classic old fashioned uses a sugar cube and water in the making of the drink. I feel that the caramel of the whiskey makes it sweet enough that I omit this step.
To health, wealth, and happiness! Cheers!
