Kalimotxo

A very “different” very refreshing drink made with only 2 ingredients (unless you count the lemon slice). I can’t believe I never heard of this drink before. Wait until you find out what’s in it…

It’s pronounced cal-ee-MO-cho. And it’s equal parts red wine and coca cola. With a lemon slice that’s totally optional. Yes you read that correctly. Red wine and coke. Yea, I was kind of blown away myself. And when I tasted it, I was blown away that it was actually good.

The origins of this drink come from Spain. It’s been said that during a wine festival back in the 1920’s they had a bad batch of red wine that they didn’t want to go to waste so they added some cola to it and served it like that and it was a hit. The drink became more popular in the 1970’s when coca cola was introduced. People like ordering this drink also because by adding the cola to the wine you get a lower alcohol by volume and you can drink more.

So the premise of this drink is that if you have some cheap wine or even some leftover wine instead of throwing it away, just add some Coke. I know, I know, don’t get all sassy on me and ask what is leftover wine? I’m talking like after a party and you wake up the next day with half a box of red wine leftover. Don’t throw it away! (That’s alcohol abuse) Just add some coke and party on.
