So What is an Alexander you ask? It’s a cocktail that’s been around for quite some time. There are 2 types of Alexander’s. One made with gin and the other made with brandy. A regular Alexander with gin is made up of gin, creme de cocao and heavy cream. It’s called an Alexander. Years later brandy became a popular ingredient instead of gin and at first it was called an Alexander #2 but later referred to as a brandy Alexander. A coffee Alexander substitutes coffee liqueur for the creme de cocoa. I found this recipe in The Playboy Bartender’s Guide by Mario Thomas and decided to change it just slightly. The recipe in the book calls for a sugared rim which I definitely kept but I also added a sprinkle of nutmeg which I saw in other recipes.

Ingredients for a gin alexander with coffee

Gin

Coffee liqueur

Heavy cream or half and half- the recipe calls for heavy cream but I used half and half because that’s all I had on hand and it worked just as well.

Sugar

Nutmeg

Recipe

First, combine the gin, coffee liqueur, and cream in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well. Secondly, pour into a prechilled coupe or martini glass (or any glass) coated with a sugared rim. Lastly, top with a sprinkling of nutmeg.

A quick way to prechill your glass is to add ice water to the glass and let it sit while you mix the drink. Dump out the ice water. Place some coffee liqueur onto a plate and some sugar onto another plate. Dip the rim into the coffee liqueur and then dip it into the sugar.
